Visiting Africa was a life-changing experience for me. It was also a much-needed course correction for my way of thinking about African people.
I remember chatting with a beautiful, wealthy, west African woman at the luggage collection area when I arrived home. I told her how much I enjoyed my visit to Africa, and I added, “I’m really glad I visited Africa to meet the people for myself. It seems I had a preconceived notion in my mind about the people there. I had this idea…”
She completed the sentence for me, “That they were all poor with big bellies?”
“Yes!” I exclaimed. “That’s all I was shown of African people as a child.” She nodded her head in understanding. But I shook my head in disgust at the impoverished portrayal most North Americans are sold about African people.
The truth is African people are incredible. And the ones I met were vibrant, jovial, and kind-hearted. Like every have their struggles, but so do we. And their resilience and creativity in overcoming their struggles is both admirable and something North Americans can learn from.
While I was on the trip, I learned that the couple leading the safari had arranged for me to teach about natural solutions and the doTERRA opportunity in each of the countries we would be visiting. I had never dreamed I’d be teaching doTERRA workshops in Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa, but there I was!
The openness of the workshop participants was encouraging and refreshing. They were hungry for effective, natural solutions that would provide them with the help they needed without needing to rely on an expensive and, potentially, unavailable government healthcare system.
They were also open to the business opportunity. To me, this was surprising. For those in Botswana and Zimbabwe, it will not be an easy road. The doTERRA market isn’t yet “open” in those countries, so the new builders there will have to jump through extra hoops to bring the product in from South Africa, where the doTERRA market is open. Their willingness to jump through those hoops is not what surprised me most though. It was their perspective on what was affordable.
Several times during our business presentation in Zimbabwe, my business partner and I helped prepare the listeners for the “big expense” they’d have to embrace to get started with doTERRA. If we were in North America, we would never have spoken that way. Instead, we would have reminded the participants that they were investing in their health and their future. We would have encouraged them to have a mindset of abundance and not speak of important things as being “expensive”.
But this was Zimbabwe. A country that went from being “the bread basket of the world” to being one of the poorest countries in Africa. It has a 95% unemployment rate. Having enough to eat is something that no one takes for granted. So, it seemed right for us to couch our sales talks in warnings that included the words “expensive”, “a lot”, “a big stretch”, and so on. When the woman who gathered the participants looked at the prices of the kits, her words were “It’s really not that much.”
I was floored…and humbled. I literally wrote the book on living in abundance and, somehow, I needed to be reminded of having an abundance mindset by a woman in one of the poorest countries in Africa. She understood the value of what we were talking about. She saw the potential in the business that she could create. And she wisely concluded that “It’s really not that much.”
She’s right. When you consider the alternatives–
- not having the solutions you need when you need them
- having to rely on harmful pharmaceuticals
- being without an option to create additional income
–the costs of a doTERRA kit and the monthly purchases are really NOT that much.
You’ll be glad to know I learned my lesson by the time I got to South Africa. In South Africa, we did a full day of training, and the afternoon training included the topic of “money mindset”. What encouraged me most about that training is that every person who came to the morning training (with the exception of one person who had to leave), stayed for the training on money mindset – even people who were not yet connected with doTERRA. They recognized that there was a societal acceptance of a poverty mindset that needed shifting, and they were hungry to hear more about how to do that.
I wrote the Life More Abundantly course as a culmination of my experiences and my reflections on the abundance that God has brought into my life over the past 25 years of walking with Him. I grew up in poverty, but I came to realize I didn’t have to stay there. I grew up with abuse, but I came to realize I didn’t have to live life as a victim. I grew up being treated like I didn’t matter, but I came to realize that I had value and that I could help others see their value.
Maybe my Life More Abundantly course is for you. It isn’t a book of secret formulas or magic incantations; rather, it is a book of practical knowledge and workable principles that you can apply to your life to begin walking in a greater level of abundance. You can find out more about it here.
Or maybe you are at the place where you need a shift. Maybe you don’t love what you do. Maybe you want to create more for yourself and your family. And maybe you could use a little help getting to the next level in your life. For that, I’d like to invite you to consider building a doTERRA business with me. As you can tell, it’s a business that you can take with you wherever you go, and it’s something that people all around the world are hungering for.
