Let’s face it, it’s not easy to always be prepared and have meals ready to take with you when you head out. And, usually, your tummy starts growling just as you are driving by Tim Horton’s or Pizza Pizza. But those places don’t have anything to offer you in terms of real food, and a sit-down meal at a nice restaurant is often out of the question. So, what can you do? Well, here are some of the things we do…
Fast food If we have to buy fast food, we choose something where we can get some good protein and a salad. Keep in mind that all meat and dairy from restaurants are rough, but fish and white meat are a bit easier to digest if you are going to eat restaurant meat. Examples of cleanse-appropriate fast foods are:
- Curry – lentil curry (dahl maknani) and brown rice.
- Burrito Bowl – with beans and veggies and guac!
- Meat & Veg – there are lots of classic dishes that are basically meat & veg. I often order a high-quality burger without the bun on a bed of lettuce.
- Juice Bars – grabbing a juice on-the-go can be a tasty snack and it can be surprisingly filling if you get added MCT oil or seeds.
Grocery Store Our preferred place to get food when we are out is the grocery store. Here are some of the things we usually grab from the grocery store to eat on the run:
- Hummus and baby carrots or cucumbers
- Pre-made salad (without cheese or meat)
- Fruit (especially organic berries)
- Veggie platter (usually without the dip)
- Raw nuts (even better if you can soak them first)
- Healthy bars that are high in good fats and protein (like Mid-Day Squares)
There are almost always healthy options when you are out. You just need to train yourself to look for different foods than your previous go-to’s.
