Leadership Development Program

If you’re reading this you’re a dōTERRA leader looking to grow your dōTERRA team. As a Canadian Founder in dōTERRA, I’ve learned a lot about how to do this effectively over the past 10 years.

On this page are two resource sections:

1. Leadership Development Resources for you to use, and then for you to recommend your team use.

2. A Leadership Development Program for you to use to grow and inspire your leaders.

Leadership Development Resources

Developing strong dōTERRA leaders requires that you first become a competent, dependable leader. To that end, the best path toward developing your leaders is to grow yourself and develop your own leadership skills.

There are a ton of great books/resources for developing leadership skills, but I consider these the best starting points:

  • 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell
  • Dare to Lead by Brené Brown
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
  • 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
These just scratch the surface. Good leaders need to be lifelong learners. In the Leadership Skills box, I list some skills which I highly recommend growing in to become an effective leader.

Leadership Skills

Money Management

Critical Conversations
Boundaries
Overcoming Hardships
Disciplined Action
Emotional Maturity
Empowering Others
Mindset Mastery
Goal-Setting
and more…

Outline To Create Your Own Leadership Program

I’ve been running a transformative leadership program for years. In this section, I’ll give you the outline I use for my dōTERRA leadership programs and you can use it to create your own.

Leadership Program Overview

My leadership development programs have 3 phases over 2 months:

PHASE 1 (first half of month one) – Goal Setting and Planning Phase

PHASE 2 (6 weeks beginning in middle of month one to end of month two) – Execution and Training Phase

PHASE 3 (after the end of the 2 months) – Evaluation Phase

PHASE 1 – GOAL SETTING AND PLANNING

Participants set a goal that they want to hit by the end of the 6 weeks (end of month 2). The goal should include:

  • Rank
  • New volume generated
  • New leaders launched
  • Income goal
  • How they want to feel during the 6 weeks and after achieving their goal

A plan is then developed with the help of the mentor to enable them to achieve their goal. The plan would be broken down into monthly, weekly, and daily actions.  There are minimum actions that every builder should be doing (e.g. 2 contacts a day, 2 follow-ups a day, etc.) and then there are the additional actions needed to achieve their goal.

Here is an example of what I ask participants to include in their actions:
Leadership Development Program Habit List

If you like these habits, I’ve made a printable Habit Tracker which you can use in your program:

With a list of the daily, weekly, and monthly activities in hand, the participants set up a system of “habit tracking” so they can hold themselves accountable.  They also choose an accountability partner to do daily/weekly check-ins with – usually another participant. They will also do weekly coaching calls with their mentor for evaluation of how the actions are helping them progress toward their goal.

PHASE 2 – EXECUTION AND TRAINING

This is the official 6-week program, though you can see that Phase 1 is an essential part of the program.  During phase 2, participants put their plans into action. They perform their daily, weekly, and monthly activities and hold themselves accountable. They do their weekly check-ins with their mentor to determine whether their steps need tweaking in order to stay on track toward their goal.

This is also the training phase. Each week, there is a different focus for their development as leaders. The training is done through a combination of written instruction, live/recorded videos and assignments they need to complete. I divide the 6 weeks of training as follows:

WEEK 1 – SELF-MASTERY
examples of topics include Time Management, Money Management (tax, accounting, being debt-free, credit limit), and Emotional maturity

WEEK 2 – GOAL ACHIEVEMENT
examples of topics include Your Why, Tracking Your Numbers, Aligning Goals Leaders, and Strategies for Volume

WEEK 3 – CREATING AND SUSTAINING MOMENTUM
examples of topics include Networking, Investing in Your Business and Growing Your Capacity for Adversity

WEEK 4 – DUPLICATION
examples of topics include Understanding Network Marketing, Offering the Business Opportunity, and How to Launch a Builder

WEEK 5 – BECOMING A LEADER
examples of topics include Understanding the role of a coach/mentor, Stewarding the doTERRA Culture, and Boundaries

WEEK 6 – MONEY MINDSET
examples of topics include Crucial Conversations, Cultivating Generosity and Breaking free of Poverty Mentality

PHASE 3 – EVALUATION PHASE

After the program is completed, take the time to celebrate successes. Where there is a lack of success, coach on how to look back and evaluate: was the plan not sufficient to meet the goal or was there a lack of commitment to the process?  You can learn as much/more from failure as from success.
