Could our worldview extend our lifespan?
Netflix recently came out with a powerful documentary where Dan Buettner, host and author of ‘The Blue Zones’, travels around the world to regions where people consistently live to 100 years old. The mission? To discover what they are doing so we can extend our lives too.
Lesson 3 - Eating Wise
What’s surprising isn’t that food is a big factor in longevity. What’s surprising is how much fun these centenarians have around their meals, while still being healthy!
Plant-based
These centenarians aren’t vegan, but they are eating 95% veggies in their diet! Whether it’s vitamin-rich greens or vibrant harvest squash, these long-living villages thrive on a diverse palette of colourful vegetables. Rather than meat being the star of the show, it’s treated more as a supplement, taking the role of a supporting actor in the plate’s story.

Wine: Can you believe it? Wine is actually a longevity secret! Almost all the blue zones drink a small amount of wine each day while socializing with their community. Drinking a glass of dry, organic red wine with no added sulphates is actually beneficial to health, especially in social settings. These benefits don’t extend to other alcohols.
Here are two big reasons this type of wine is healthy:
1. Resveratrol – This organic compound is found in natural, red wines and is known for its anti-aging properties. Resveratrol is part of a group of compounds called polyphenols. They act like antioxidants, protecting the body against damage and disease.
2. Fermentation – Fermented foods are known for increasing gut microbiome, which greatly improves overall health. Drinking quality red wine increases gut health by improving gut microbiome. White wine, comparatively, has only weak effects, whereas beer, cider, spirits have no positive effects on the gut.
Personally, I love drinking kombucha, a fermented tea drink, which contains even more health benefits than red wine and contains nearly zero alcohol.
I also make sure I take MetaPWR Advantage every day, which contains Resveratrol, premium collagen, NMN, and 14 other anti-aging ingredients. I can’t recommend Advantage enough! I’ve noticed big changes in my skin, digestion, and energy levels from this supplement.
Moderation: Okinawans (a Japanese Blue Zone) say “hara hachi bu” before their meals, which reminds them to stop eating when they are 80% full. The phrase literally translates to: “Eat until you are eight parts (out of ten) full”. Blue Zones also practice mindfulness habits as they eat, including eating slowly, listening to the body’s cues while eating, and focusing on flavours and the feeling of the food.
One big secret for me is to set up a healthy, balanced portion on my plate before sitting down to eat, and then not getting up to get more just because something is tasty. The food will always be there for my next meal, and I can have more then.
I also love to pray before I eat. This gives me time to intentionally relax while shifting my mind from work and busyness to gratitude to God for my food. When I eat slowly and my body is relaxed, I know I am secreting more enzymes in my saliva, and I honestly just enjoy my mealtime more. Keeping myself constantly grateful for food also helps me focus on what I like about my food rather than what I’m missing or craving.
I’m not perfect though, and sometimes I do overeat or I eat something that doesn’t sit right in my body. On those days, I am happy I have taken one to two Terrazyme capsules before my meal. I also like to rub DigestZen on my belly for extra support. These supplements help my body process the extra food and relieve digestive discomforts. It will definitely help you too!.
Isn’t it incredible that we can always learn more about our food? I’m over 50 and I’m still learning more about my health every day
